I miss reading

One of the most irksome things about the process of writing (and re-writing, and editing) a book is how little time I seem to have these days to actually read. This is leaving a massive book-shaped hole in my life.

I’ve only just re-discovered audiobooks, at the suggestion of another time-poor friend. My first audiobook phase coincided with a swimming phase - I invested in a waterproof ipod holder and waterproof headphones, and I listened to the entire Ladies Detective Agency series while doing lengths of the pool at Lewisham Leisure Centre. The only annoying part was that I would frequently be stopped by swimmers who were curious to know what exactly I was carrying around my neck.

So this time around I’m using my commute and gym time to listen to The Thursday Murder Club on Audible. It’s not the same as curling up in a corner with a mug of something hot (or a glass of something cold), a blanket and just the words on the page, but it’s another way of enjoying the story. And I suppose that’s the whole point.

I hope/ plan to have an audiobook for Salt Sisters. There are a few options to make this happen, so watch this space. In the meantime, I wanted to share some of the books I have read this year…

Lianne Moriarty - Truly Madly Guiltily

Make Ready - Jon Oates (my friend and fellow debut author)

Sing, Unburried, Sing - Jesmyn Ward

The Beekeeper of Aleppo - Christy Lefteri

Where The Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens

The Hypnotist’s Love Story - Lianne Moriarty

The Things We Left Unsaid - Emma Kennedy

The Unseen - Roy Jacobson

The Lessons - Naomi Alderton

Orchid & The Wasp - Caolinn Hughes

The Milkman - Anne Burns (read for the second time)

American Dirt - Jeanin Cummins

The Woman In The Window - A. J. Finn

Long Bright River - Liz Moore (for book club)

Girl, Woman, Other - Bernardine Evaristo

A Friend Is A Git You Give Yourself - William Boyle

Z: A Novel Of Zelda Fitzgerald - Therese Anne Fowler

Margaret Atwood - The Testaments

…I guess that’s not too bad.

Which of these would you like a review of? Or my bookclub notes?
